Every year, Safer Sleep Week emerges as a beacon of hope and guidance for new parents and caregivers across the UK. Led by The Lullaby Trust, this national awareness campaign is more than just an event - it's a vital mission to safeguard the youngest members of our society. With around 700,000 babies born in the UK annually, the importance of spreading knowledge on safer sleep practices cannot be overstated. Despite the progress in raising awareness, the devastating fact that around three infants a week continue to fall victim to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) highlights the critical importance of this campaign.
Understanding SIDS and Its Prevention
SIDS, often referred to as "cot death," remains a largely unexplained tragedy that strikes families without warning. However, research and experience have illuminated several practices that significantly reduce the risk of this devastating event. Safer Sleep Week is dedicated to amplifying these life-saving messages, focusing on simple yet effective measures to protect our babies.
Theme: The Safest Place
This year, Safer Sleep Week focuses in on the theme "the safest place." The campaign shines a light on the vulnerability of babies' airways, especially during the initial months of life. The guidance is clear and straightforward: babies should sleep on their backs, on a firm, flat surface devoid of any padded or cushioned areas. This position ensures their airways remain open, minimising the risk of suffocation and SIDS. Suitable sleeping environments include cots, Moses baskets, bassinets, carry cots, or cribs, all designed to meet these critical criteria.
Dos For Keeping Your Sleeping Baby Safe
When it comes to ensuring safe sleep for your baby, there are a few tips and tricks typically recommended. These include:
- Remain smoke-free during pregnancy and after giving birth
- Always keep your baby on their back when sleeping
- Make use of the feet to foot position, where your baby;s feet are at the end of their cot or Moses basket
- Use a high quality waterproof mattress that is both firm and flat
- Make sure nothing is covering your baby’s head
- Keep your sleeping baby in the same room as you for their first few months
- Put your baby to sleep in a Moses basket separate from your bed
- Remove all soft toys, bedding and bumpers from your baby’s cot or Moses basket
Dont’s For Keeping Your Sleeping Baby Safe
As well as being aware of what you should do, there are a range of important pointers that should be avoided when it comes to ensuring safe sleep for your baby. These include:
- Do not tuck your baby’s blanket any higher than their shoulders to ensure their head/face is not covered
- Avoid sleeping in the same bed as your baby
- Do not let your baby get too hot or too cold by maintaining the rooms temperature between 16-20 degrees celsius
- Never fall asleep on the settee or armchair with your baby
- Do not swaddle your baby too tightly
- Never put your baby to sleep on their front or side
- Do not smoke during pregnancy or during breastfeeding, as well as removing your baby from the potential of secondhand smoke
The Challenge of Unsafe Sleep Products
The market is flooded with baby products, some of which are marketed as suitable for sleep but fail to meet safety standards. Safer Sleep Week aims to empower parents with the knowledge to discern and select safe sleeping spaces for their babies. It's not just about avoiding certain products; it's about understanding why they pose risks and how to make informed choices for the safety and well-being of our children.
Making Safe Sleep Accessible
Recognising that not every family has access to the ideal sleeping setup, Safer Sleep Week also addresses the needs of parents in vulnerable or emergency situations. The campaign provides practical advice for creating a safe sleep environment, even when resources are limited, ensuring that every baby has a chance at a safer sleep
